All other conditions and ailments are preventative and are a product of mistreatment...Simply NOT true !

A statement at Ivyology says:

" A popular misconception is that physical or mental ailments are a result of old age. A fading memory, dementia, aches and pains are not a result of ageing! There have been so many times when I’ve heard, “oh, it’s just old age”. The only things that are a result of old age are wrinkles and grey hair. Yup! All other conditions and ailments are preventative and are a product of mistreatment or simply not knowing how to avert them."

The high lighted part of the statement is a misconception in itself.
Memory loss is a symptom that can be associated with dementia.There is currently no prevention or cure for most forms of dementia; however, symptoms may be reduced with medication. Wrinkles and grey hair are NOT symptoms of or caused by old age alone. Not all forms of dementia are a result of mistreatment nor are ALL forms of dementia preventative. Some of the most common forms of dementia

* Alzheimer’s disease
* Vascular dementia
* Parkinson’s disease
* Dementia with Lewy bodies
* Huntington’s disease
* Alcohol related dementia – Korsakoff’s syndrome
* AIDS related dementia
* Fronto Temporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD)
* Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

There are many other rarer causes of dementia, including progressive supranuclear palsy and Binswanger's disease. People with multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease can also be at an increased risk of developing dementia. A lot of these are not preventable and some may even be hereditary. See the following link:

I don't believe it is true for physical ailments either. For example heart disease can occur for genetic reasons as can other health problems. It can help to look after your body, but some things will just happen anyway.

It is one of the difficult things you see in aged people. I worked in high care aged home, and not all those in had dementia or alzheimers but those who did, not all was preventable or a result of mistreatment.

Nunyaa, you have posted on a subject close to my heart and thank you for telling it like it is. Any form of dementia is the cruellest disease and of course most forms are not preventable, as you say. If only governments would spend on research and treatment of this, rather than weapons!

It certainly is one of the cruelest diseases humans can get. To suggest that "mental ailments are a product of mistreatment or simply not knowing how to avert them", smacks of ignorance.

That paragraph was discussing ailments purely related to the ageing process. Maybe my wording wasn't up to scratch to make that clear enough. However, there are a few things we can do to prevent dementia; intake of omega 3 fatty acids, gingko biloba, vitamin E, exercise, and 'brain exercises' such as crosswords etc.
"Wrinkles and grey hair are NOT symptoms of or caused by old age alone" - I never said they were caused by that ALONE.
My information is from psychology textbooks from my university - a very legitimite source.
I'll make sure I'm very thorough with my wording next time. "smacks of ignorance" is a bit harsh though. I don't write things that aren't from legitimate sources.

Peace!

This above is what you said, posted or found in your research. When looking further afield and from working in an aged care facility, particulary where the high risk dementia patients were, it is known that not ALL forms of dementia can be prevented. What I wrote isn't harsh, it is from lots of research and working with dementia patients.

I understand where you're coming from, I thought saying "smacks of ignorance" was a bit harsh - it's hard not to take that to heart, you know? Like I said, my wording wasn't up to scratch to make it clear enough. It's deleted now and I think I'll keep to writing superficial articles from now on to avoid these kinda misunderstnadings....
